The meeting is a joint organization of the Real Sociedad Matemática Española and the Sociedade Portuguesa de Matemática.
Each edition has been structured around three main scientific areas. In addition to the plenary conferences, specific sessions for different areas will be held in order to gather expertise and ideas among Spanish and Portuguese mathematicians.
The first Iberian Mathematical Meeting took place in February 2007 at Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, in Lisbon. The second happened in October 2008, at the Universidad de Extremadura, in Badajoz.
